Useful tips for visiting Japanese inns

CHECK IN　チェックイン

Many Japanese inns require that you take off your shoes upon entering. You can leave them in the entry way and the staff will take care of them. Please check-in at the front desk. Bring your passport, as Japanese law requires that inns make a copy. It is common for inns to request payment upon checking out, however, some inns require payment upon checking in. Please confirm the time of payment with your hotel when booking.
まず、玄関で履物を脱ぐ所も多くある日本旅館。脱ぐときは、入ってきた進行方向のまま脱いでOK。玄関に残した履物は旅館スタッフが管理してくれます。その後、フロントに向かいチェックインの手続きを。日本の法令により、旅館側にはパスポートのコピーを取る必要があるので、快く応じるようにご協力を。支払いは、後払いが一般的ではありますが、先払いの旅館もあります。予約時に確認すると良いでしょう。

IN THE JAPANESE HOTEL　館内

After changing into your cotton kimono (yukata), feel free to walk around the inn. Visit the souvenir shop, restaurant,
bath, and other areas (these can differ depending on the inn). Generally, you cannot wear your yukata outside, however, some inns have arranged for outdoor yukata. Please refrain from having parties or making loud noise inside or outside of the inn.
客室で浴衣に着替えた場合、日本旅館館内は浴衣のまま歩いても構いません。売店やお土産販売コーナーがあったり、飲食店や浴場など、館内の施設（旅館によって異なります）を浴衣で巡るのも楽しいひと時に。一般的に、浴衣で外に出るのは良くありませんが、旅館によっては外歩きのための浴衣を用意している場合もあります。館内外問わず、大声で騒ぐなどの迷惑行為は絶対にやめましょう。

GUEST ROOM　客室

Please take off your hotel slippers when entering your room. Please do not drag your suitcase over tatami mats,
as it will scratch the floor surface. Please do not place luggage, walk on, or sit in the alcoves. Please do not hang towels over the wooden beams below the ceiling to avoid mold. The maid will attend to your meals and bedding, as this service is included with your reservation. Tipping is not a custom in Japan, however, as the same maid tends to your room for the entirety of your stay, a 3,000 yen gratuity is standard practice.
館内に靴で入ってきた場合も玄関でスリッパに履き替えた場合も、客室に入る時は履物を脱いで畳に上がって下さい。バッグやトランクは畳の上で引きずらないように。畳の表面を傷つけてしまいます。来客をもてなす大事なスペース「床の間」には荷物を置いたり、立ち入ったり、腰掛けたりしないように。また、カビの原因になるので、鴨居には濡れたタオルなどを掛けないようにしてください。部屋での食事や布団の支度はすべて仲居さんにお任せを。日本旅館のもてなしの一部です。チップの習慣は日本にはありませんが、部屋付きの仲居さんには心付けを渡すのも良いでしょう。目安として、3,000円程度です。

Bathhouse　浴場

Please do not submerge yourself in the bath right away. Make sure you wash your body before entering the bath. Eating and drinking in the bath is strictly prohibited. Please refrain from dipping your towel, inserting bath salts, or doing laundry in the bath. The bath is used by every hotel guest, so please be sure to keep the area clean. This open and spacious Japanese bath promises to give you a moment of blissful relaxation.
いきなり湯船に浸かるのは厳禁。まずは、体にかけ湯をして汗や汚れを流します。湯船に浸かりながらの飲食はマナー違反です。また、湯船にタオルを入れたり、入浴剤を入れたりもダメ。湯船を利用しての洗濯はもってのほかです。旅館利用者がみんなで使う浴場です。特に、湯船は清潔に保つよう配慮して利用を。広くて開放的な日本旅館の浴場は、利用者に気持ちの良い至福体験を提供してくれますよ。
