The Etchu-Yatsuo Hikiyama Festival is a Shinto ritual hosted every May 3rd. It dates back to the Edo period and the Yatsuo Hachiman Shrine Spring Equinox Day Festival. There is a Japanese lion dance and six beautifully carved and sculpted hikiyama floats. The floats are absolutely stunning!
5月3日開催の神事「越中八尾 曳山祭」。八尾八幡社春季祭礼として江戸時代を起源とし、人形・彫刻など越中美術工芸の粋を集めた6台の曳山と獅子舞が見所。豪華絢爛!

Kamishin-machi 上新町曳山

Kamishin-machi – the town behind the Yatsuo hikiyama festival. Their float has sculptures of the Japanese courtier and poet, Ariwara no Narihira. There is a phoenix on its roof top.
八尾曳山の始まりをつくったのはこの町とされる。御神体は在原業平と供女。屋根上には鳳凰が。

 

Suwa-machi 諏訪町曳山

Suwa-machi’s float has statues of Empress Jingū, a legendary Japanese hero Takenouchi no Sukune and Emperor Ōjin. The portable shrine and carvings are done by Inami-machi town’s woodworking successors.
神功皇后と武内宿禰、応神天皇が御神体。見越、大彫ともに、歴代井波町番匠屋の作。

 

Nishi-machi 西町曳山

The sculpture for Shitashin-machi used to be from a famous scene of the father and son of the Kusunoki family parting. Currently, the float has a statue of the god of wealth, Daikokuten. It has a roof, where all four sides slope downward.
御神体は恵比寿で、城端西上町から譲られたもの。他の町に先駆けて花山屋台を廃止。棟造りの曳山を建造。

 

Ima-machi 今町曳山

Ima-machi’s float has a sculpture of the scholar, poet, and politician Sugawara no Michizane. It has a dragon on its roof top. It is the only float that has carvings under the portable shrine.
御神体は菅原道真。屋根上は飛竜。今町曳山にのみ見越下にも長彫があるのが特徴。

 

Shitashin-mach下新町曳山

The sculpture for Shitashin-machi used to be from a famous scene of the father and son of the Kusunoki family parting. Currently, the float has a statue of the god of wealth, Daikokuten. It has a roof, where all four sides slope downward.
御神体は、当初、楠公父子桜井駅決別の人形だったが、現在は大黒天。屋根は四方棟造りになっている。

 

Higashi-machi 東町曳山

It has sculptures of the famous Japanese poet, Ono no Komachi. The portable shrine represents one of the outside gates of the Imperial Palace.
御神体は深草少将と小野小町。屋根上は二重屋根。見越は建礼門をあしらっている。
